BANGALORE: ?In case of flu symptoms, wear mask. Avoid shaking hands, places of public gathering, spitting on roads. Contact helpline - 22660000 / 23469520-21?.
?If u have fever/ throat pain / cough pls stay at home and consult doctor. Wash hands after with soap.
Sneeze/ cough covering ur mouth with cloth/tissue?.
These are the messages issued by the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) that are making rounds in the city and educating the public about the preventive measures to be taken for the swine flu.
Along with its continuing efforts to screen people door to door, the BBMP is also investing heavily in an awareness campaign There are five types of different text messages that includes swine flu symptoms, preventive measures, dos and don?ts, and information about the helpline numbers. ?There has been a good response from the public and more people are now able to reach our helpline number and share their apprehensions,? said Dr Manoranjan Hegde, Project Coordinator, Communicable Diseases, BBMP.
?The text messages have been sent to all the customers of BSNL, Hutch, Airtel and other service providers free of cost. This publicity material is to educate the public and reduce the panic that has been increasing day by day,? he said. He also explained the various other means of information dissemination being planned by the Palike to create awareness about the swine flu.
Hegde informed that the BBMP has held talks with the Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) and Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation authorities and has handed over posters prepared on the swine flu and its dos and don?ts. These posters would be put up on the buses.
Stickers are being put on the BBMP-engaged lorries and autos. The stickers would be provided to private autos too if they are interested.
Hoardings on the subject have been put up in prime locations of the city and the expense for this publicity project is being used from the BBMP budget.
This initiative of the Palike has received a good response and a higher number of calls are being made to the helpline numbers, said a senior BBMP official .
Screening on
BBMP is also striving to the control the panic among people and facilitate detection and cure of the flu by carrying out screening of people.
Till date 15 out of the 19 confirmed cases have already been discharged from the hospital. On August 29, the Palike had screened 396 people with flu like symptoms.
At least 30 health officers have been deputed for carrying out house to house screening of the people under its limits.
?All the areas which are within BBMP limits will be covered. We advise home quarantine for all those who are found positive for H1N1.
In addition, the family members are also being administered Tamiflu,? said Dr Hegde.
